First Day Program

First Day is the Barnes & Noble affordability program for the purchase of course materials in participating course sections. Barnes & Noble partners with publishers and with FIU to offer the most competitive prices for the course materials in this program. The First Day prices are only available during the opt-out window at the beginning of each semester. All First Day Course Materials are charged to your student account, unless the student opts-out, and the materials are immediately accessible to students in Canvas. If a student chooses to opt-out then the student will NOT be charged and will NOT be able to access the course materials using the Inclusive Access link in Canvas.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

How do I know if a course section is participating in the First Day Program?

Visit the Barnes & Noble Course Materials page and look up a course section to see the required course materials. All materials listed on this page have been adopted by the faculty member teaching the course. If a course section is participating in the First Day Program you will see a note that says “WAIT FOR CLASS” for those materials and you will not be able to purchase it on this site. You will see the same course materials twice, with two different ISBN numbers, however, the title, author and edition should be the same. One of the two shows the Frist Day price and the second shows the full retail price for the materials if you choose not to participate in the Frist Day Program.

How can I participate in the First Day Program?

If you are in a course section that is participating in the First Day program you do not have to do anything to participate. When you log into the course on Canvas on the first day of class, click the First Day Course Materials tab and you will see a link to access your course materials there. Your FIU student account will automatically be charged the price of the book.

If I do NOT want to participate in the First Day Program what do I do?

Participation in the First Day Program is voluntary. However, it is recommended since the price offered for the course materials are the best price in the market. If you do not wish to participate you may opt-out of the program. When you log into the course on Canvas, click the First Day Course Materials tab and you will see an “opt-out” link. You can click on that and confirm that you wish to opt-out on the pop-up. Once you opt-out the charge to your student account for the course materials will be credited and you will no longer be able to access the course materials on this link in Canvas.

What does opt-out mean?

All course sections participating in the First Day Program offer the opt-out option. When a student chooses to opt-out of the program, the student’s account will be credited the cost of the course materials, which is automatically charged on the first day of class. They will also lose access to the course materials through the First Day Course Materials link in Canvas.

Why do I see a course material charge on my FIU student account?

If you see a course material charge on your student account, it means that you are registered for a course that is participating in the First Day Program. This charge is the cost of the course materials the professor selected for your course. You will have automatic access to these materials in Canvas on the first day of class. You will not have to take any further action or purchase this material separately. You can simply pay FIU the balance as you would for tuition and fees.

I was in a course section that is participating in the First Day Program, but I dropped it. I still see a course material charge on my student account. What do I do to get a credit?

A credit should be automatically applied to your student account for the course materials if you drop the course within the first thirty days of class. The credit may take up to 24 hours to appear. If you do not see a credit for the course materials within 24 hours, first, please make sure that you have dropped the course and that it appears as dropped on your FIU account. If it does not, please proceed with dropping the course, if that is your intention, and then you will see the credit for the course materials within 24 hours. If the course already appears dropped and the credit for the course materials has not been applied, and 24 hours have passed since you dropped the course, please contact Barnes & Noble at FIU at 305-348-3271 or via email at firstday@fiu.edu.

When is the last day to opt-out?

The last day to opt-out of the First Day Program in a participating course is fourteen (14) days following the first day of class.

I opted out but I still see the course materials charge on my FIU account. How can I get it removed?

A credit should be automatically applied to your student account for the course materials if you opt-out. The credit may take up to 24 hours to appear. If you do not see a credit for the course materials within 24 hours, first, please make sure that you have opted out by checking the First Day Course Materials page in Canvas. If you still see the “Opt-Out” option, then you have not opted out yet. You may proceed to do so by clicking on that Opt-out” icon and then you will see the credit for the course materials o your FIU student account within 24 hours. If you see an “Opt-In” option in the Canvas Frist Day Course Materials page, then you have opted out already. In this case, if the credit for the course materials has not been applied, and 24 hours have passed since you opted out, please contact Barnes & Noble at FIU at 305-348-3271 or via email at firstday@fiu.edu.

How can I participate in the First Day Program in my other classes?

First Day is only available for certain course materials, therefore not all classes can participate in the Frist Day Program. Any class that does not have the option in Canvas is not a participating course. If you have a good experience with the program and see the value in it, please share with your professors so that more of them can participate for those courses that it is available.

How can I opt back into the program if I opted out initially?

You can go to the First Day Course Materials tab in the course in Canvas and click the “Opt-In” icon. You will immediately see the course materials available again and will be able to access them on the spot. The charge for the course materials will then be applied to your FIU student account once again within 24 hours of you opting back in.

When is the last day to opt back into First Day if I have opted out?

The last day to opt-in is the last day of the opt-out window, which is fourteen days following the first day of class.
